There was some correspondence in the Daily Post about three weeks ago about the proposal to build a new Museum of Liverpool at the Pier Head. Some people doubted the need for this - "Oh not another museum!" I think this latter view is quite wrong. National Museums Liverpool owns part of the site for a start. the museum of Liverpool Life, while doing its best, is small and hardly in the first division of museums. A new museum to tell the story of our city would link together the the city's history - the good and the bad - and the wonderful buildings and art treasures which the Victorians left to us. We need to tell the story of Glastone, Kitty Wilkinson, Dr Duncan, Canning, Tommy Handley etc etc etc. No other city with such a story to tell would surely be so unwilling to tell it. There is hardly anything on display about these "greats" of our history.
So I think we should support NML with its plans and urge the public authprities to come up with the money. This is not only for the enjoyment of the ocals, though that is a very fair objective. It is also a means of increasing our appeal to tourists - who will spend money in our shops, restaurants and hotels and help to create jobs.
So - support please!
